Dressing Down | Lace Skirt + Hood

Hey y'all! I've had some emails asking how to "dress down" skirts in such a way that it doesn't look like you're too fancy for every occasion and I thought my outfit from yesterday might help illustrate that. In people's minds skirts=dressy and, although it's important to show respect by putting effort into your attire, sometimes it can draw undue attention. When everyone else is wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you stand out like a chocolate covered strawberry among the apple slices. Both are appropriate in a fruit bowl, but the strawberry looks like a little dramatic. Or something.

This white lace skirt is rather fancy, no? It's a lovely cotton lace and definitely the best new item in my summer wardrobe. Yesterday was a day of running errands, so I paired it with a casual, sporty shirt. By going with the "sporty" look instead of with a graphic tee or chambray button-up, it turned the skirt into just an interesting texture to the outfit instead of a focal point.

It worked out well that the contrast of the shirt is white, because it gave a cohesiveness that an outfit with different styles needs. I also went with a tank the exact color of my shirt so that it was just easy on the eyes.

I threw on a simple pair of flip flops and my favorite long earrings. I left off any other jewelry due to time constraints, but I probably would have only added a casual wrap bracelet.
